For Us Single Moms on Mother's Day

To many people, Mother's Day is a day to celebrate mother figures from every aspect of life. We get together, eat, laugh and exchange cards. But to those of us that have no one special to plan an amazing day for us (or maybe there are people around...but they just don't care) the day seems about as much worth celebrating as you will celebrate tomorrow being Monday morning. However, I refuse to believe that we shouldn't celebrate what we do year round for our kids and others, simply because there is no one to really appreciate what we do (most children, especially my case, as in a 4-year old, have no idea this day, or any day, is NOT about them lol). Here are 5 REASONS WHY you are an amazing person, unique human, and kick-ass mom!  1.) WE don't need someone else to recognize we are special just for being a mom. We know we are.     Most people draw their validation from external sources, and while its nice to be noticed, when we live for attention, we will die wh

One foot IN, One foot OUT: Goal Sabotage

This article was featured on the Global Sisterhood Online! Click HERE to read this and other amazing articles and more! We all have dreams of a better life, things we want to do or achieve, or have. But many of these dreams will remain just that, a thought about where we want to be instead of where we ARE. Most people will give up these dreams and say, "it will never happen for me anyway, so whatever." And they are right. Here's why. Commitment: The Fast and the Furious Society. We want things and we want them NOW, with minimal effort and even less of a clue as to how we will procure the desired item/lifestyle, etc. As a society, the need for instant gratification is becoming more and more common when it comes to achievement, relationships, job success, and life in general. Considering "instant gratification" is often used for behavioral change (think Applied Behavior Analysis, Pavlov's Dogs, etc) it isn't hard to understand the WHY

Workout at HOME! (Great for rain, snow, or stay at home or single parents)

***Disclaimer: As always, you should check with your doctor before beginning  any physical activity or exercise program to make sure your workout is the best and most effective method suited for your needs and fitness levels.*** As as single parent, I know its hard to make time for exercise, especially with work and the kids activities...  BUT it can be done! :) If you need a significant workout but can't make it to the gym or out for a run, an easy and effective way to maximize calorie burn at home is with "Circuit Intervals". Interval training causes max calorie burn and continues to burn calories post workout. By doing different exercises with periods of rest, you can get the most out of a home work-out.  In circuit intervals you are shooting for max heart rate (in a healthy person around 160-180bpm) with an equal rest period to get the rate back down (remember, at least to 100bpm). You can figure out your heart rate (HR) by checking your pulse on your wr

Why Coffee Is AMAZING!

Besides the fact that it is like a warm hug on a cold day, an energizing kiss first thing in the morning, or a reason to just sit around and relax alone or with compnay, here are other researched and evidence-based reasons why coffee is fantastic... Understanding coffee's effect on the brain  Increases mental acuity (can make you smarter!), aids in depression and elevates mood, and reduces risk of diseases such as Alzheimer's and  Parkinson's... When caffeine enters the bloodstream, it blocks the neuro-receptors in the brain for Adenosine and Dopamine. Adenosine is a neurotransmitter that, when binds to its appropriate receptors, causes drowsiness, dilates blood vessels and slows down other neuronal firing. Dopamine is essentially the cause for feelings of "pleasure."  Caffeine binds to Adenosine receptors and causes the brain to essentially "speed up" causing other neuronal firings. The result is a release in the "flight or fight&quo

Eat Less, Live Longer (and Healthier!)

Eat Less...Live Longer! Since the 1930s, research has been conducted that theorizes not only do organisms live longer when restricting calories, but also are less likely to succumb to disease such as diabetes, cancers, etc. The why's and how's are addressed, with some articles and statistics for further self-research... As always: This article is for informational purposes only. It is not a diagnoses or treatment for any disease, nor a replacement for advice from a doctor.  It's not just about eating less Calorie restriction should not be confused with nutrient restriction. The opposite is true: one must maximize the nutrient content while minimizing calorie content. How is this done?  Through a diet low in calories and high in nutrients. Mainly a diet of raw, organic foods and "superfoods."   Learn MORE: There is a research based diet conducted at UCLA over many years, which you can learn more about by visiting: The Anti-Aging Diet . Chronic Stress

...our series on "Chronic Stress" Part 1: An Introduction I have studied the effects of chronic stress for the past few years, both in my psychology major and currently as part of what will be my Master degree thesis... Let's face it, stress is a part of daily life. But how much is too much? This subject is one of the most important of ones that should be made aware to the public... CHRONIC STRESS! Now I am not talking about a little life stress, everyone has a little. And some stress is good (such as working out or riding a roller coaster for the thrill of it)  But constantly being worried, upset, or miserable over something (or everything) everyday of your life can cause more health issues than you think, INCLUDING atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), fat accumulation and distribution, chromosome damaage, even brain (yes BRAIN) damage.  But you don't have to take just MY word for it. When it comes to experts on the effects of chronic stres
